Mwavita, born in time of war wins the Hollywood International Independent Documentary awards as best foreign documentary in the shorts category. The reportage, by Daniele Bellocchio and Marco Gualazzini for Gli Occhi della Guerra, tells the story of the sexual violence that continues to happen every year in Congo. In fact, in this country, rape is used as a weapon of war amongst the armed groups, and it’s roots sink deep into the long history of exploitation, conflict and poverty that has indelibly marks this martyred land.

But the documentary does not only contain the suffering of women. There is also an understanding of the pain on the part of the reporter: “We hope that this awareness serves as giving major attention to the tragedy of rape in Congo. A horror that needs ever more to be told. The war that consumes the bodies of the weakest, most vulnerable: from Bakavu to Goma, from Rutshuru to Kavumu it is a daily barbarity, a conflict far from the spotlight, but that must not be ignored. The drama feeds on silence. It is all our duty to know and understand it first.

Mwavita is also a finalist of the Italian Awards: Capodarco L’altro Festival: voice and images for the society and the environment, the Luchetta Prize and the L’Étranger Film Festival.
